CBT - Compulsory Basic Training

CBT is a constant assessment course required by law, completion of which allows riders to use up to 125cc machines. If after a period of two years you have not passed the DSA test you will simply need to re-take the CBT course.
CBT is the first step required to obtain your full motorcycle licence.
All CBT courses offer a guaranteed pass giving you as much instructor time as required. All you would have to pay is bike hire on each subsequent visit.
Before attending you must already have your driving licence with the appropriate categories:
Category P will allow you to ride up to 50cc machines restricted to 30mph.
Category A (age 17 and over) will allow you to ride up to 125cc with a maximum power of 14.6bhp.

So what happens during the course?

On your CBT course we will start with a short introduction to the course, clothing & equipment suitable for motorcycle riding.
Following this you will be introduced to the motorcycles controls and shown how to take care of it. Next you will be taken through the process of taking it off and putting it on its stand as well as starting the machine.
Once you have completed all that we will go through a step by step process to ensure that you can successfully accomplish all of the following:
  • moving off and stopping
  • gear changing
  • slow riding including slalom, figure of 8 and U turns
  • braking
  • observations
  • left and right turns
This all takes place away from the road and traffic on a large car park.
With all of this mastered we take a break from riding and head to the classroom to discuss aspects of safe road riding. We then get ready to ride out on the road for the first time. We will go out in small groups of 2 pupils with each instructor. During your ride you will receive hints, tips and guidance from your instructor over a radio.
Providing you ride to a safe, legal but basic standard on your 2 hour road ride you will be issued with your certificate of completion (DL196) which validates your licence to ride motorcycles of up to 125cc with L plates for a period of 2 years. If you have not passed your DSA test in that time, you simply need to re-complete CBT for a further 2 year validation.
There is a lot to cover on your CBT. We will endeavour to do so in just 1 day but, if there are any items that we feel you have not satisfactorily mastered it will be necessary to return another day to finish things off. In this instance you would only be required to pay a bike hire charge, the extra instruction is provided free of charge. Remember this is a road safety course, if you don't complete on the first day you are not a failure.
It is imperative that you read and understand fully the Highway Code prior to attending for your CBT.
